members only / 2023 YEAR IN REVIEW

For the last two years, it has been my honor and privilege to serve as President of the New Haven Rowing Club. The governance of our club has been structured by our founders with a future vision of prosperity and volunteerism that will surely endure the test of time.

Our current Board of Directors demonstrated strong teamwork and leadership by delivering changes that will reshape our future. Notable achievements include the approval of our downstream storage facility by the Town of Oxford and membership approval of our revised investment policies and club bylaws. In addition, we made investments in new equipment and established a mutually beneficial relationship with our local boat manufacturer, Vespoli USA. We purchased a new coaching launch and upgraded our safety equipment and guidelines.

Our team of volunteers prepared for an exciting Head of the Housatonic Regatta. However, river conditions were unsafe, and the regatta was cancelled. While this was a disappointment, we are well prepared for the Head of the Housatonic 2024. Our men’s and women’s competitive teams had a memorable 2023, competing in over 20 regattas with many strong finishes.

Coaching Committee

Members: Peter Becker, Gerry Friel, Audrey Novak, and Laura Nowacki

With much thanks to the coaches, Margaret Gordon and Dave Vogel, who coached 100 sweep sessions and 54 sculling sessions. Additionally, sweep rowers participated in sessions with Yale Coach Mike Gennaro in the spring (funded by donation). Furthermore, there were 14 participants in the 2023 learn-to-row program, with 2 subsequently joining the club full-time.

Rowing Committee

Members: Dan Schley, Andy Jackson, Julie Brown, Heather Friel, Mark Schofield, and Dave Vogel

The team successfully proposed a new investment in a fleet of boats from Vespoli and new sculling oars from Concept 2. Boats were clearly identified by configuration and weight class, and all sculling oars and riggers were set with consistent measurements to meet the needs of our rowers.

A new rack space policy was created to ensure equitable distribution of rack spaces among our active rowers. Additionally, a new system for organized storage of sweep and sculling riggers was implemented, and a new workbench along with a range of new tools were purchased and installed.

Building and Grounds Committee

Members: Dave Thomas, John McCarthy, Bill Gardiner, Stu Lathers, Leonti Dailis, and Ned Williams

The team repaired the heating ducts and replaced the filters in the HVAC systems. The boathouse passed the Town of Oxford fire inspection with no violations. Several plumbing issues were repaired, and motion sensor lighting was installed around the outside of the boathouse. We also collaborated with the Rowing Committee to find the appropriate location for storing sculling riggers.

Safety Committee

Members: Kevin Manning, Eric Dannemann, Leonti Dailis, Laura Nowacki, Susan Schmidt, and Dan Schley

The team revised the safety guidelines, including updated fog and river level rules. We also raised awareness regarding Hi-Viz clothing and completed AED training. Additionally, we conducted evaluations for new members and new rowers.

Social Committee

Members: Chris Pace, Laura Nowacki, and Carrie Gordon

The Social Committee hosted many breakfasts this year, including the New Year’s Day row. Additionally, they hosted a well-attended holiday party during the month of December. The social committee activities were fully funded by donations from the membership.

Club Regattas

Derby Sweeps & Sculls (DSS)
Regatta Co-Directors: Rebecca Hatcher and Kevin Manning

Head of the Housatonic (HOH)
Regatta Director: Mitz Carr

This was the last year for the DSS regatta. Both Kevin Manning and Rebecca Hatcher did an outstanding job delivering a memorable event. The HOH Regatta Director, Mitz Carr, worked tirelessly along with many NHRC volunteers to prepare for the 2023 Head of the Housatonic. Entries in the event were at an all-time high, but the team was concerned about the high amount of rain flooding the river. After conferring with the US Rowing Referees, the decision was made to cancel the event due to river flooding, debris, and concerns for the safety of the competitors.

Racing and other activities

The men’s and women’s competitive sweep and sculling programs competed successfully in both spring and fall regattas. In typical NHRC fashion, all of our teams were well-coached and competitive throughout the year. Many of our competing members participated in the following events: Head of the Lagoon, Head of the Occoquan, Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, Head of the Charles, Head of the Quinobequin, Head of the Riverfront, Green Mountain Head Regatta, CRI Fall Classic, Head of the Cuyahoga, Springfield Rockrimmon Regatta, Overpeck Summer Sprints, USRowing Masters National Championships, CBC Invitational Regatta, Rockland Masters Regatta, Independence Day Regatta, Cromwell Cup, Diamond State USRowing Northeast Mid-Atlantic Masters Regional Championships, Derby Sweeps and Sculls, C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints, and Sarasota Invitational. You can view all the results on Regatta Central, Herenow, Ronin Racing, or the individual regatta website. All NHRC members are welcome to compete, and we are especially proud of our Legacy members who not only compete in their 70s and 80s but consistently are top contenders.

Legacy Committee

Members: Dave Thomas, Jen Brackett, Libby Muligan, Amy Jean Porter, Norm Thetford, and Baxter Walsh

Mike Weiner is sponsoring the story and video production of four legacy members who average over 80 years old and competed at the 2023 Head of the Charles Regatta. The production will be presented on April 14th at the New Haven Rowing Club Boathouse for all to see. These legacy members, Baxter Walsh, Ned Williams, Peter Derow, and Dave Vogel, made history by being the first over-80-year-old quad to compete at the HOCR. David Thomas, President, March 2024

members only / 2022 YEAR IN REVIEW

Medical professionals slowly but surely began taking control of the COVID pandemic. While organizations, businesses, and schools maintained safety protocols, it was clearly obvious that we started moving back to normal times again.

Our coaching program started and ended the year strong with excellent participation and enthusiasm from both coaches and rowers.

Others clubs were equally excited to participate in our home regattas, Derby Sweeps and Sculls (DSS) and the Head of the Housatonic (HOH). Both home regattas were well attended and our members maintained the strong tradition of volunteerism.

The men and women’s competitive programs were able to successfully compete in many sprint and head races throughout the season.

The club also held a special remembrance gathering for Steve Flagg, a longtime member and contributor to the NHRC who passed away earlier in the year. Steve was a founding member of NHRC and many friends and family members shared very special memories of Steve’s experiences at the club. His legacy is permanently enshrined literally in the woodwork of our boathouse.

Building and Grounds repaired damage to the outside trim on the boathouse, sanded and re-stained doors and power washed the boathouse shingles. In addition, repairs to the alarm system and the outside stairway were necessary to meet safety standards. For the future, the team is looking to update our heating system, make plumbing repairs and explore options for our floating dock and solar panels for the boathouse roof.

The Safety Committee continues to monitor all safety conditions and protocols for the club members. Training on our club AED, updating marine safety lighting for our rowing shells and rating members’ rowing skills for safe boating.

Social Committee

Members: Chris Pace, Julie Brown, Laura Nowacki, and Carrie Gordon
The Social Committee delivered a memorable year working together to bring normal social activities back into the fold. Morning breakfast and conversation after a hard row adds everlasting memories and forever friendships. Our first holiday party in the boathouse after a two-year COVID layoff was special.

Club Regattas

Derby Sweeps & Sculls (DSS)
Regatta Co-Directors: Kevin Manning and Rebecca Hatcher

Head of the Housatonic (HOH)
Regatta Director: Mitz Carr

Both DSS and HOH exceeded expectations for participation and financial results. While the DSS regatta started off with some spirited racing, weather conditions rapidly deteriorated. Before the afternoon racing, officials cancelled racing because of dangerous weather conditions (high winds and whitecaps on the river). The HOH regatta exceeded all our expectations with participation and competitiveness. While NHRC performed well in races, it was our volunteers who seized the day. All NHRC members worked together to deliver one of the finest fall regattas of the season.

Racing and other activities

The men’s and women’s competitive sweep and sculling programs competed successfully in both spring and fall regattas. In typical NHRC fashion, all of our teams were well coached and competitive throughout the year. In addition to our home regattas, our teams competed at Carnegie Lake, US Rowing Youth Summer National Championships, Overpeck Summer Sprints, Head of the Riverfront, Head of the Charles, and Head of the Schuylkill Regattas. Results are posted on RegattaCentral, Herenow, Ronin Racing or the individual regatta websites. All NHRC members are welcome to compete and we are especially proud of our Legacy members who not only compete in their 70s and 80s, but consistently are top contenders.

David Thomas, President, March 2023

members only / 2021 YEAR IN REVIEW

For most of 2021 the club remained under the cloud of COVID but there were positive signs that activities were trending towards a return to normal.

While the Derby Sweeps & Sculls was canceled, we were able to host the Head of the Housatonic, albeit with some restrictions on number of entries and a prohibition on spectators. Also, members of the women’s and men’s racing teams participated in some sprint and head races.

MEMBERS ONLY / 2020 Year in Review

2020 was a unique year in NHRC’s history due to the COVID pandemic. Rowing was limited to singles and doubles with family members. Both the Derby Sweeps & Sculls and the Head of the Housatonic were canceled. Also, Hopkins did not run a program out of NHRC in 2020.

Annual Meeting & Elections

The Annual Meeting was held virtually (via Zoom) in two parts, due to a nomination for a board member from the floor that required that ballots be sent out again. The first part of the meeting was held on March 14th and the second part of the meeting was held on March 28th.

The election results were as follows:

Officers:
Charles Gamble, President
Dave Thomas, Vice President

Downstream Project

At the September 15th board meeting, Stu Lathers informed the Board that the Club’s application related to building a boathouse downstream of the main boathouse was denied at the last Oxford Planning and Zoning Committee meeting. Options are being explored.

Buildings and Grounds

Mark Schofield revarnished the bay doors at the front and back of the building and also repaired the Tomkewitz house after some light vandalism.

Racing and Other Activities

The 2020 season was a robust sculling year boosted by the COVID restrictions and NHRC ingenuity. While team boats (eights, fours, and quads) were not permitted to row, many rowers took to their singles and others learned how to scull.

During August, September, and October, team members got together to organize time trials which included NHRC only events and scrimmages with other clubs. Dave Vogel, Dave Thomas, Mark Schofield, Susan Schofield, Susan Schmidt, Sandy Blanchard, Audrey Novak, and Saman Majd all helped organize the events by assisting in timing, bow markers, handicaps, safety and starting launch, dockmaster duties and communicating with outside clubs. We had seven very successful time trials (July 18, August 1, 22, 30, September 12, 27, and October 11).

The first three trials were NHRC-only events, which typically included 13 to 15 scullers. Then, word got out to other clubs (Riverfront, Maritime, and Saugatuck) who wanted to participate. As a result, the remaining four time trials included members from these other clubs increasing the size of the events from 20 to 27 scullers. We were lucky to have great weather and an experienced group of NHRC members to pull off these mini-scrimmages, making the 2020 COVID summer one to remember for all participants.

NHRC members Mark Schofield, Andrea Schley, and Dan Schley participated in the Head of the Ponds on Mashpee Wakeby pond, Cape Cod, in early September. Susan Schofield played an important role on the regatta committee and as an official on race day. It was a grueling race of 7500m, rowed on a beautiful September morning that circumnavigated three islands and required a great amount of steering and savvy. Mark had the fastest raw time around the course beating Olympian Greg Stone (however, Greg won on handicap). Andy and Dan won the Mixed Doubles event and their first-place trophy was a jar of Ponds Cold Cream.

The Schleys and the Schofields also rowed the full length of the navigable portion of the Housatonic River over the course of four months. The two couples rowed each of the fourteen navigable sections of the river from Kent, Connecticut, all the way down to where the Housatonic pours into Long Island Sound.
